A study from the Weizmann Institute of Science, published in Science in January 2026, found that genetics accounts for roughly 50 to 55% of variation in intrinsic human lifespan, more than double the 20 to 25% estimate that has been the scientific consensus for 30 years.
The key methodological insight: previous studies lumped all deaths together, including accidents, infections, and violence. When researchers separated extrinsic mortality (deaths caused by outside forces) from intrinsic mortality (deaths caused by biological aging), the genetic signal roughly doubled.
The team analyzed three large twin databases from Sweden and Denmark, including, for the first time, twins who were raised apart. Twins raised apart share genetics but not environment, making them the gold standard for separating nature from nurture.
The revision does not mean lifestyle is irrelevant. The same mathematical model confirms that lifestyle still extends median lifespan by 1 to 5%. The new finding simply means the ceiling, how long your biology can sustain you, is more genetically set than previously understood.
Dementia risk showed the strongest genetic signal of all: up to age 80, heritability of dying from dementia was approximately 70%, higher than that of cancer or heart disease.
For decades, the scientific consensus was reassuring: your genes account for only about 20 to 25% of how long you live. The rest was attributed to lifestyle, environment, and chance, and that framing was the backbone of the entire longevity wellness industry.
A study from Uri Alon's lab at the Weizmann Institute, published in Science, has now revised that number to approximately 50 to 55%. For you personally, that revision explains why some people with excellent habits still die young, and why some people who smoke and eat poorly still reach 90.
The methodological problem is straightforward: if someone is killed in a car accident at 45, that death gets counted in traditional longevity studies as data about their biological potential. It cannot be, because the biology never got the chance to run its course.
By filtering out extrinsic deaths, the genetic contribution rose sharply. As a sanity check, the team traced the same calculation across generations of twins born from 1900 to 1935, and as extrinsic deaths fell generation by generation, measured heritability rose in lockstep.
To be candid, a 50 to 55% heritability figure does not mean your lifespan is determined. Heritability tells you about population-level patterns, not individual destiny, and someone with unfavorable genetics who maintains metabolic health will likely outlive a genetically advantaged peer who does not.
What it does mean is that the longevity industry's implicit promise, that lifestyle optimization can overcome nearly any biological starting point, is more complicated than marketed. The ceiling is more fixed than we thought, and the interventions most likely to push it are cellular and molecular, not behavioral.
This connects to the same Weizmann lab's companion work: the interventions most likely to extend maximum lifespan target mTOR, mitochondrial health, and senescent cell clearance, not diet or exercise alone.
Why Should You Care?
If genetics governs roughly half of how long you live, then the most powerful longevity interventions are unlikely to be found in a gym or on a dinner plate. The research increasingly points toward cellular and molecular therapies as the tools that will move the ceiling, with lifestyle as the foundation that keeps you healthy enough to benefit from them when they arrive.
