  • Peter Fedichev, a theoretical physicist and co-founder of longevity biotech Gero (which recently partnered with Roche subsidiary Chugai), argues that the human body functions like a glider: it climbs to a peak between roughly ages 20 and 30, then descends at a broadly fixed rate from there.

  • The higher you climb at your peak (better VO2 max, stronger muscles, sharper cognition, lower inflammation), the longer your glide path before you hit the threshold where basic function fails.

  • A 47-year longitudinal study from the Karolinska Institutet found that physical fitness and strength begin declining around age 35, regardless of how much someone trained earlier in life, confirming the broad consistency of the decline rate.

  • VO2 max (your body's maximum oxygen consumption capacity, a leading predictor of longevity) declines roughly 10% per decade in sedentary adults, and falls roughly 46% between ages 20 and 70, even in active individuals.

  • The single biggest accelerator of the descent, according to Fedichev's AI analysis of over 100 million patient records: metabolic dysfunction. Diabetes alone can subtract six or more years of healthy function.

If you are in your 40s, 50s, or beyond, here is the finding that cuts right to the point: it may be too late to change your starting altitude, but understanding the shape of the curve changes what you should be doing right now.

Think of your body as a glider: it climbs to its highest point between ages 20 and 30, determined by how physically active and healthy you were in those years. After that, the glide begins at a rate that is broadly similar for almost everyone.

A 2026 study from the Karolinska Institutet tracked adults for 47 years and confirmed that physical performance begins declining around age 35. Even participants who became physically active later in life improved their capacity by only 5 to 10 percent, a meaningful but modest gain.

Research published in the Journals of Gerontology found that physical activity in early adulthood (ages 18 to 29) predicted later-life memory level independently of everything that came after. A one standard deviation increase in early-adulthood fitness was equivalent to having memory performance comparable to someone 3.3 years younger.

To be candid, the "glider" framing is Fedichev's editorial synthesis, not a single peer-reviewed finding. The claim that the rate of descent is equally fixed for everyone is a simplification, and the Karolinska study itself found that late-life exercise can still move the needle.

What does hold up in the peer-reviewed data is the actionable part: metabolic health is the most powerful lever available to you now. Insulin resistance, elevated blood glucose, and excess visceral fat each accelerate the descent faster than almost any other modifiable factor.

Diabetes, left unmanaged, subtracts roughly six years of healthy function. That number is peer-reviewed and appears consistently across multiple large population studies.

For you personally, this research reframes the question from "how do I reverse my age?" to "how do I slow my descent and avoid the accelerants?" That is a more honest and more achievable goal.

Why Should You Care?
The gap between people who age gracefully and those who don't is largely driven by how high they climbed before the glide began, and how aggressively they manage metabolic health during the descent. If you are not already treating blood sugar, insulin sensitivity, and aerobic capacity as top priorities, you are leaving the most powerful levers on the table.
