If you already drink coffee in the morning, this research gives you one more reason to enjoy it. A study presented at the European Congress on Obesity in Istanbul found that a diet high in polyphenols (plant-based compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties) was strongly associated with healthier cellular aging.

The research tracked more than 1,700 adults across seven years and measured their telomere length at two points in time. Telomeres are the protective caps at the end of each DNA strand, similar to the plastic tips on shoelaces; when they erode, cells age faster and die sooner.

People with the highest overall polyphenol intake had a 52% lower risk of having short telomeres compared to those who consumed the least. That is a substantial difference for something as simple as daily food choices.

Coffee stood out on its own: even just one cup per day was linked to a 26% lower risk of short telomeres compared to non-drinkers. Eating four to five servings of fruit daily was associated with a 29% lower risk.

One counterintuitive finding is worth noting: olive oil, red wine, and vegetables showed no significant association with telomere length in this study, despite being polyphenol-rich foods. The researchers do not yet have a clear explanation for why coffee and fruit outperformed them.

"Our results suggest an important message: a diet high in polyphenols, including fruits and coffee, may contribute to healthier cellular aging," said Isabella Kury Guzmán, the study's lead investigator. "It is not about one specific anti-aging food, but rather the overall impact of daily dietary habits over time."

Researchers at King's College London noted that polyphenols have already been linked to lower blood pressure and better vascular and brain function as we age, calling this study a meaningful addition to that body of evidence.

To be candid: this study was presented at a conference and has not yet been published in a peer-reviewed journal, so the findings should be treated as promising rather than definitive. It is also difficult to isolate whether polyphenols specifically are responsible, or whether people who eat more fruit and drink coffee simply have healthier diets overall.

Still, the practical implication is hard to argue with. Drinking a cup of coffee and eating a few pieces of fruit each day is low-cost, low-risk, and increasingly supported by evidence as a meaningful investment in how your cells age.
