Poor Mental Health Can Make You Age Faster Than Smoking

October 8, 2022

  • Declining mental health has a greater impact on aging compared to smoking.
  • That’s according to a study carried out by Deep Development on a cohort of 11,914 Chinese adults.
  • The study now recommends factoring in psychological and mental health when developing anti-aging interventions.
For years, researchers have known that mental health is essential for longevity just as much as physical health. But how important is it? Well, according to findings published by Deep Longevity in the journal, AgingUs, declining mental health has a greater impact on the rate of aging compared to smoking.  As we age, we naturally accumulate molecular damage that contributes to the emergence of age-related illnesses and diseases. The intensity of this molecular damage varies from person to person. However, the more intense it is, the more accelerated our aging becomes.  By using aging clocks, scientists have managed to detect an abnormal increase in aging before it spells disastrous consequences for the person. These life-changing models have also been used in the development of anti-aging medications for personal prescriptions, and for the general population.   To carry out the study, researchers from Deep Longevity developed a new aging clock that analyzed the biometric data and blood of 11,914 Chinese adults. They found that individuals with a history of lung, liver, and stroke issues showed an increase in their biological age compared to smokers.  But what was even more shocking is that individuals with vulnerable mental states (feeling lonely, dissatisfied, and sluggish) were also found to have an increased biological age compared to smoking. The scientists also noted that people living in rural areas (with limited medical services) and being single also accelerated the aging process.  The research study now concludes that the psychological and mental aspects of aging should not be overlooked in the research and development of anti-aging interventions.  Credit: https://list23.com/1087022-being-sad-and-lonely-accelerates-aging-more-rapidly-than-smoking/
