Betty White’s tips to living a long and purposeful life

January 28, 2021

  • At 99 years of age, Betty White has lived a pretty enviable and successful life
  • And despite being past her prime, she still continues to enjoy lucrative movie offers in Hollywood today
  • We discover her four secrets to longevity that might just change your life in 2021

Betty White recently celebrated another year of life. And if you think about it, she is one of the few people that truly attests to the age-old saying (pun intended), “Age is nothing but a number.”  At 99, she still shines like the golden goose of the Hollywood industry.  Perhaps her 1991 archived interview summarizes her current predicament perfectly: “You don’t fall off the planet once you pass a given age. You don’t lose any of your zest for life, your lust for life, or your will” And 30 years on, she is still strutting boisterously along the corridors of movie sets; working in an industry that is gradually sidelining older women in television and film.  But how does she manage to pull it off? How does she manage to stay relevant in such a cutthroat industry?  Better yet… what is her secret to longevity? “I don’t have a secret.” Betty declared in a 2018 interview with Parade magazine. Moreover, she has not expressed any plans of retiring.  “I just love to work, so I’ll keep working until they stop asking.” It’s hard to tell whether Betty is purposely or inadvertently living her best life. What we do know is that there are a few things she’s been doing throughout her life that could be the secrets to her enviable success and prolonged longevity. Let’s analyze them, shall we?

1. Following your purpose

One admirable quality that Betty possesses is her indomitable will to work. It provides her a sense of purpose and a reason to wake up every morning. So, it’s no surprise that she has remained so successful throughout the years. Having a purpose has been linked to improving both mental and physical well-being; not to mention slowing down the effects of aging on the brain. White admits that keeping busy has been a fundamental aspect of her long and productive life.  She encourages others to pursue what they are passionate about and to run the gauntlet even when times are tough. You can start small by discovering what you love. In White’s case, she discovered that she was into acting, but also loved solving cross-world puzzles and getting involved in animal protection.

2. Don’t take yourself too seriously and find joy where you can

One of Betty’s philosophies in life is that you should never take things seriously, and always have a broader perspective of the world around you. Self-reflection is important; especially in an external world that can easily disrupt your train of thought and knock your energy off. Take time to redirect your energy to the subtle things that make you happy.

3. Invest in causes that you support and believe in

White is quite active in a number of causes, especially those that are tied to the one thing that she loves more than her acting; rescuing and taking care of animals! For instance, White is a current trustee of the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association. She even wrote a book, Betty & Friends: My Life at the Zoo.  Before she discovered her insatiable desire to act, she was also an aspiring zookeeper and forest ranger. She was even named an honorary forest ranger at one point in time!

4. Living in the present

The other thing she focuses on is living in the present and enjoying what life has given her. “I don’t think about things I might have missed out on,” she told Parade. In another interview with Katie Couric, she also gave her personal advice about dealing with grief. It’s not wise to stay focused on what has already happened, or what you think might happen; rather, remain focused on what is currently happening.  “You don’t look ahead, and you try not to look back,” she said.  Although it’s difficult to be fully immersed in every moment, we have to admire Betty’s strategies that could be the key to her longevity. Moral of the story? Happiness is an internal force that can produce amazing external results. Happiness is the key to longevity!
