Can drinking protect your brain from aging?

December 2, 2020

  • A study made by the University of Georgia determined that consuming alcohol in specific quantities can postpone age-related neurological diseases
  • The quantity of eight drinks for females and fifteen drinks for men is ideal for maintenance of brain aging

The University of Georgia conducted a study determining to see if alcohol could postpone brain aging, but only consuming following specific guidelines. It Is known that while aging, our neurological faculties decrease, causing conditions like Alzheimer’s and dementia. On the other hand, changes in lifestyles like healthy diets and habits will postpone or reduce the risk of these age-related neurological conditions.  This study had the participation of 19,887 people between middle age and older adults, and the relationship between alcohol consumption and cognitive function was the object of study. They were asked to report every two years the quantity and frequency of their alcohol consumption. For women, any amount over eight drinks per week was considered “light to moderate” drinking, as for men, that number was fifteen drinks per week. A cognitive score was calculated based on a test where the overall cognitive function was checked, vocabulary, word recall, and general mental status were considered. People who had either one or two drinks per week showed better performance on the test and didn’t show signs of neurological deterioration over time against people who didn’t consume alcohol. Also, other factors that were taken into consideration were smoking habits and education levels. During this study, subjects were separated into two groups based on their performance and for how long their neurological conditions remained unaltered or began to decrease; the performance was separated in “high and low” groups.  The quantity established by this study to talk about light drinking was eight drinks for females per week and fifteen for men, this being the optimal quantity for maintaining healthy brain development. This doesn’t mean that taking more than three drinks in one day can compensate for the week; in fact, any quantity exceeding light drinking will be harmful to the brain; this drinking pattern, known as binge drinking, where people can drink up to 4 drinks in two hours, is likely to increase risk of developing neurological diseases.
