Can Gene Therapy Find an HIV Cure?

February 15, 2022

  • Gene therapy continues to show promising results in finding the cure for HIV after the first woman was cured earlier this year.
  • The patient also suffered from myeloid leukemia; a unique type of cancer that starts in blood-forming cells in the bone marrow.
  • She was observed to be in remission and free of the virus for 14 months without having to take antiretroviral therapy.
In February, the world received news that the first woman, a myeloid leukemia patient, was cured of HIV. But unlike her predecessors — two males who received adult stem cells from bone marrow transplants — she received stem cells from an unlikely source; umbilical cord blood.  Her unique case is part of a study led by Dr. Yvonne Bryson of the University of California Los Angeles, in collaboration with Dr. Deborah Persaud of John Hopkins University in Baltimore. The study aims to track 25 patients with HIV that will undergo stem cell transplants from umbilical cord blood to treat cancer, as well as other serious conditions.  The patients will first have to undergo chemotherapy to kill off the cancerous immune cells. They will then receive stem cell transplants from individuals with a unique genetic mutation where they lack the receptor cells that the virus uses to infect other cells. Scientists believe that these individuals will then develop an immune system that is resistant to HIV.  However, there is skepticism on whether stem cell transplants will be used as a viable treatment for curing most people living with HIV. On the other hand, the report does reaffirm that a cure for HIV is possible, and presents a stronger case for the use of gene therapy to develop a potent cure for the life-threatening Virus.  Credit: https://7news.com.au/technology/first-woman-reported-cured-of-hiv-c-5714369
