Chlorophyll and its surprising connection to longevity

January 27, 2021

  • In the quest to conquer longevity, scientists are taking a deeper look at chlorophyll
  • Chlorophyll is a pigment that is naturally synthesized by plants during photosynthesis and fundamental for the structure of plant life.
  • Aside from its nutritional benefits, it also has therapeutic properties, and could potentially be a groundbreaking drug in enhancing human longevity.

The world is a weird and wonderful place, full of myths and misconceptions about remedies that will enhance longevity. But, there is very little that is peddled about one particular drug; chlorophyll. Which, ironically, is one of the most impressive and effective drugs to boost longevity. Chlorophyll is a pigment that is found in all green plants, as well as many other organisms occurring in nature. For chlorophyll to be produced, it requires photosynthesis. That is the process by which light energy is converted into chemical energy.  Because we consume many plants in our diet, chlorophyll is an integral part of our daily nutrition, and it’s easy to see why. Aside from providing sustenance, the drug boasts a number of therapeutic properties, vitamins, and antioxidants that are useful to the body. According to Keith Kantor, nutritionist, dietician, and CEO of the Nutritional Addiction Mitigation Eating and Drinking program, here’s what he had to say about the drug: “Chlorophyll suppresses appetite, aids in weight loss, decrease spikes in insulin with less cravings, helps with skin healing, helps in detoxifying blood, reduces the risk of cancer, increases energy, helps in eliminating odors, and helps in boosting the immune system.”  As a matter of fact, chlorophyll has been used as a viable health supplement by ancient humans for thousands of years. Recent studies have also shown that it can be used to treat a number of skin conditions, body odors, and even fight certain types of cancer. Despite there being ample documentation on the use of chlorophyll derivatives in traditional medical applications, it is its potential as a viable cancer-protection agent that has created a lot of media buzz. Biological activities attributed to chlorophyll derivatives have shown consistent cancer-prevention as well as antimutagenic and antioxidant activities. This means that Chlorophyll could be viable for mutagen trapping, induction of apoptosis, and modulation of xenobiotic metabolism. Also, natural chlorophyll derivatives could modulate biomarkers of cancer risk. Moreover, recent research efforts have also included an in-depth investigation of the impact of digestive factors on the structure of chlorophyll. The study is also aiming at improving bio accessibility to better understand which certain pigments may be bioavailable in humans and therefore, have an impact on the prevention of cancer.
