How a buckwheat-based diet can enhance longevity

November 30, 2020

  • A new study has revealed that adopting a buckwheat based diet can help increase the level of SIRT1 protein in the body
  • SIRT1 plays a vital role in enhancing longevity and increasing life expectancy
  • Before this study, only caloric restriction was known to optimize SIRT1 production in the body

A recent experiment carried out by a team of scientists from Krasnoyarsk, Russia, has shown that incorporating a healthy, low-calorie diet of plant-based products—specifically buckwheat—can greatly enhance the production of SIRT1 protein by the body.  The scientists in question consisted of a team of biologists from the School of Fundamental Biology and Biotechnology at the Siberian Federal University. The study was carried out on 24 rats divided into groups of 3; with the first control group receiving a normal amount of feed, the second group (calorie restriction) received a 30% reduction in feed, and the final group (experimental) received a normal amount of feed, but with 30% of the feed substituted for ground buckwheat.  After 8 weeks of the experiment, samples were then derived from the kidneys, liver, blood, and stomach of the rats to calculate the level of SIRT1 in their bodies. To improve the accuracy of these measurements, the scientists further utilized special molecules that produced a colored substance when identifying SIRT1. The team also recorded the weights of all the rats throughout the entire study. Upon completion, it was observed that the animals from the third group (experimental) had an increase in body weight compared to the second group (calorie restriction), even though both groups had consumed the same amount of calories.  This observation demonstrates how important buckwheat is in the growth and development of our bodies over time. Interestingly, however, the highest amounts of SIRT1 protein were still observed in the calorie restricted group, but at the expense of organ and body-weight loss. Furthermore, the levels of the protein were much higher in the experimental group compared to the control group, but with no weight loss observed.  Indeed, SIRT1 is vital in determining the nutritional status of our body cells. Such that when its levels are high, our stress resistance is enhanced and the aging process is slowed down. However, an excessive amount of SIRT1 in your tissues and organs could also be a strong indicator of hunger, triggering anemia as well as several other negative side-effects.  According to Shubhra Pande—who is currently the Postdoctoral fellow of the department of School of Fundamental Biology and Biotechnology at the Siberian Federal University— this study proves that diets containing buckwheat result in calorie restriction. This is mainly because buckwheat contains plenty of indigestible fiber.  Pande also believes that other plant-based products such as nuts, fruits, and grains can similarly stimulate SIRT1 production. Therefore, including buckwheat into your diet can improve your overall health and enhance your longevity.
