Longevity tips inspired by the life of a Japanese doctor who lived to 105

December 21, 2020

  • The Japanese longevity expert and physician Dr. Shigeaki Hinohara had an extraordinary life for many reasons — his 105 years life span being the most interesting
  • When he left the world in 2017, he was chairman emeritus of St. Luke’s International University, Toronto, and honorary president of St. Luke’s International Hospital, Tokyo
  • He is best known for his book, “Living Long, Living Good”

Let us look at the longevity tips Dr. Shigeaki Hinohara shared in his book to help others attain a long and healthy living life.

1. Don’t Retire. Keep hustling until 65 and more

Dr. Hinohara viewed things from a unique perspective. According to an interview with the Japan Times in 2009, he never believed in the concept of retirement. According to him, there is no need to retire, but even if people want, retirement should be a lot later than 65 years of age.  Preaching what he stated, he was seen treating his patients and working 18 hours a day just a few months before his death.

2. Keep exercising

He always emphasized the need for regular exercise. He stated that he took two stairs at a time to get his muscles moving. Additionally, Dr. Hinohara also carried his luggage and packages and gave 150 lectures a year, usually for 60 to 90 minutes, all done standing, for staying healthy.  He pointed out that people who live a long life have one thing in common; they are not overweight. Obesity is regarded as a significant risk factor leading to a spike in morbidity and mortality. His spartan diet is worth following.

3. Keep yourself busy

As per Dr. Hinohara, not having a busy schedule is a surefire approach to age quicker and die sooner. One must stay engaged, not just for the sake of being busy. Being busy in activities that have a goal and a purpose really helps. Janit Kawaguchi, the journalist who considered Dr. Hinohara as his mentor, stated that Hinohara was an incredible person when it came to helping people, waking up early in the morning, and doing something extraordinary for others.

4. Live a stress-free life

Dr. Hinohara strongly favored that exercise and nutrition are great pathways to a longer and healthier life. However, he also maintained that a person should not be obsessed with restricting behaviors.  He made everyone realize that at times it is best to relax the rules. Just like a child who forgets to eat or sleep while having fun. We can keep up with that attitude even when we have turned into adults. It is wise not to tire our bodies with too many rules. It is better to live a stress-free and busy life.

5. Doctors can’t cure everything

He insisted that science alone can’t help. Moreover, he felt that pain is mysterious, and the best way to forget pain is by having fun. Illness varies from person to person. He believed that to know the illness and help people, we need liberal and visual arts, not just medical ones. As every disease is related to the heart, staying happy is the key.

6. Find inspiration, peace, and happiness in art

Dr. Hinohara, towards his end of life, was unable to eat yet refused a feeding tube. He was discharged and died months later at home. He didn’t try fighting death but found peace in where he was through art. Instead of scribbling on small bits of paper, try to have big art. Draw something so big that you wouldn’t be able to finish it untill your last breath.
