New biohacking trends supporting the quest for health and longevity

March 12, 2021

  • Biohacking refers to a huge range of activities that are undertaken to improve personal health and wellbeing
  • Simpler bio hacks include lifestyle interventions such as diet changes, better sleep, spending time in nature, and living a purposeful life
  • Extreme techniques are based on the latest science and technology and include diet changes based on genetic analysis, stem cell therapy, and computer chips embedded under the skin

Biohacking is one of the latest health-inspired trends that is taking root not just in Silicon Valley but around the world as well. Also referred to as Do It Yourself (DIY) biology, biohacking methods focus on strategic activities or enhancements that improve health, performance, and well-being. Just like hackers manipulate computer systems, biohackers seek to hack and improve their own bodies. But why would anyone choose to do this? Having a sense of control over one’s own body can be valuable at a time when events of the outside world seem uncontrollable. Many people biohack for health reasons, but others are just looking to explore unconventional ideas and take full control of their bodies. Methods and techniques for biohacking can vary from simple approaches such as diet or lifestyle changes to advanced techniques that are based on the latest science and technology. Eating good food is one of the simplest and most natural biohack. This entails focusing on a minimally processed plant-based diet to improve health. Sleep is another simple biohack that can help ‘cleanse the brain’. Sleep deprivation is known to weaken the immune system, and getting enough quality sleep can have the opposite effect – preventing many diseases and ultimately extending one’s life. Intermittent fasting is an increasingly popular natural biohack that has become quite widespread over the last few years. This is a feeding pattern that cycles between periods of fasting and eating. Studies show that intermittent fasting can stabilize sugar levels, suppress inflammation, and increase resistance to stress, among other benefits. One of the most public proponents of this technique is Twitter CEO, Jack Dorsey. Spending time in nature helps decrease stress and increase healing particularly after surgery. Other natural bio hacks include living a purpose-driven life, connecting to people and animals (such as dogs), and attaining moderate health. For those who are willing to stretch biohacking to its limits, various extreme techniques are already possible – thanks to advancements in technology. Optimizing one’s diet based on one’s genes is one example of extreme biohacking. This method is scientifically referred to as nutrigenomics. Already, companies exist that are offering this service on a commercial scale (evaluating people’s DNA and sending personalized diet plans based on known genetic markers). Human augmentation entails modifying one’s body using technology. A group of biohackers known as ‘Grinders’ embed computers or chips under their skin, basically turning themselves into some type of cyborg. These extreme biohackers may then be able to open office doors or pay for merchandise by simply swiping their wrist. Embedded devices that enable human brains to directly communicate with computers are on the horizon. Other extreme biohacking techniques include using medical procedures to achieve longevity. A good case study is Bulletproof founder Dave Asprey – who had stem cells harvested from his bone marrow and injected into his joints to reverse aging. As biohacking methods continue to evolve and become even more common, one question arises. Is biohacking safe? Natural DIY techniques such as lifestyle changes and spending time in nature are obviously safe. Other methods – specifically some extreme biohacking techniques – are however getting bad raps. It is up to those who are interested in biohacking to thoroughly research methods and only pursue techniques that help achieve their desired health outcomes while minimizing or eliminating risks.
