New Study Knocks Three Years Off Participant's Biological Age

May 15, 2022

  • Scientists at the Helfgott Research Institute achieved stunning results in a study investigating the effects of diet and exercise on biological age.
  • The researchers investigated the process behind DNA methylation and successfully reversed methylation with only lifestyle changes.
  • The magnitude of the effects bolsters the research; researchers noted a three-year reduction in participants’ biological age after only eight weeks of lifestyle changes.

New research from the Helfgott Research Institute, in conjunction with the Yale University Center for Genome Analysis, has demonstrated that changes in diet and lifestyle can successfully roll back biological aging in humans. Most people are familiar with chronological age, or a person’s age in years. Biological age refers to more subtle and complex factors that arise from individual cells.

Biological age is chiefly influenced by genetics, but research continues to demonstrate that proper diet and exercise while avoiding toxins can significantly improve health and reduce aging at the cellular level. The scientists at the Helfgott Institute built upon an established method, DNA methylation, for tracking biological age.

The Helfgott researchers prescribed dietary supplements likely to support the body’s natural methylation system. Similarly, lifestyle choices that increased demethylation were avoided. Through this method, the scientists devised the first glimpse into how simple changes in diet and lifestyle can reduce biological age.

Perhaps the most remarkable finding from the study was the magnitude of the results. Participants who followed dietary and lifestyle guidelines demonstrated a biomarker-confirmed reduction in biological age by three years. Not only did participants show a significant decrease in biological age, but the positive changes appeared after only eight weeks of following the researcher’s regimen.

Healthy living has always been associated with longevity, but rarely does novel research paint such a clear picture of the effects of healthy living on biological age. As research progresses, scientists will discover new techniques for evaluating and interacting with the methylation system of human cells. From this research, it may be possible to recommend specific action plans that can demonstrably reduce a person’s biological age.
